The Players Foundation hosted its first Connect event for former professional footballers and their guests, at St Mary’s Stadium in Southampton.
Ex-players from Southampton, Brighton, Bournemouth and Portsmouth football clubs enjoyed a day of reconnection, expert talks and practical support, organised by Rob Milsom, Beneficiary Liaison Officer at the Foundation.
‘It’s really rewarding to see so many players in one room, enjoying the chance to catch up with their former teammates, and to meet ex-pros from other clubs. They’re all keen to learn more about The Players Foundation and what we have to offer for those who need either financial support or guidance on the best person to speak to,’ explained Rob.
Leroy Whale, President of the Ex-Saints, who helped Rob set up the event, said: ‘Meetings like this can only be positive. It’s a while since I left the game but it’s so important for us all to know that organisations like The Players Foundation are there to help us, if needed.’
Former Brighton and Hove Albion player, Guy Butters, added: ‘I will be sharing all the information I’ve gathered today with my ex-teammates, who I know are trying to establish their own former player associations. This has been an excellent day and something of real benefit to all of us.’
Among the guest speakers was Sports Performance Psychologist, Peter Dutton: ‘I think it went well, it was a really good group who were prepared to ask the difficult questions when necessary. Mental health is a huge focus for so many people at the moment and it was important to have the opportunity to share some of my experience and knowledge with the players.’
The Foundation is planning to hold further Connect events in 2027.
