Applications open today (September 1st) for The Players Foundation’s Student Living Expenses Grant, aimed at supporting former professional footballers and scholars who are making the move into full-time university education.
The grant will help alleviate the financial burden of basic living costs, including rent, utilities and food, so that beneficiaries can fully engage in their studies and prepare for successful post-football careers.

Gareth Farrelly, Chairman of The Players Foundation, said: ‘The Student Living Expenses Grant reinforces our commitment to supporting professional players beyond the game. We know how important it is for players and scholars to prepare for a second career and this fund is designed to offer support to those planning to attend a full-time accredited university course.’
Last year, when the Student Living Grant was introduced, more than 200 applicants received support, with the Foundation distributing a total of £300,000 to beneficiaries.
Among the recipients was 20-year-old former Burton Albion scholar, Ronny Wakelin, who’s now studying finance at a university in Pennsylvania, while also playing regularly for the college team.
Ronny still harbours ambitions to succeed as a professional footballer and believes strongly that a solid education is essential for his future:
‘The grant from The Players Foundation gives me the chance to continue my university studies in America, where there are so many opportunities within football and beyond. I think it’s important to have a good education, because something positive always comes from it.’
Applications for the Student Living Expenses Grant are open until October 31st.
