‘Asking for help can be the biggest issue for some ex-players’ – David Harrison

The Chief Executive of The Players Foundation, David Harrison, has been reflecting on the challenges that professional footballers face when they leave the game, and the crucial role that the charity plays in providing support and advice.

In his first interview since his appointment in February, David stressed the importance of collaboration with stakeholders throughout football to ensure that ex-players received the right level of support when they need it most.

David has more than 30 years’ experience in the game, having previously held the position of Director of Football Operations at both Manchester United and Everton. And that knowledge and expertise is shaping his approach to his new role at the Foundation:

‘I believe I’ve got a real feel for the kind of problems that players are facing when they exit the game. A lot of players can suffer from a crisis of confidence and sometimes, just asking for help can be the biggest issue of all.

‘Training and education are two vital areas that always need a special focus because the majority of players leave it until the last moment before they consider what comes next.’

David added: ‘It’s hugely important that players know they have somewhere to go when they need help.  The Foundation is proud to support ex-pros in any way we can – even if we can’t offer help directly, we can point people in the right direction, so please do get in touch.

‘I’m looking forward to further discussions with our many partners throughout football over the coming months, so we can work together on making the best use of our resources for the benefit of players.’
