Foundation Chairman says strong connection with players is vital to offer the right support

The Chairman of The Players Foundation, Brendon Batson OBE, says the charity’s appointment of two former Premier League footballers as Beneficiary Liaison Officers is a huge step forward in understanding the needs of former players.

Simon Haworth and Rob Milsom will serve as the essential link between the work of the Foundation and the former players and scholars across the country that the charity supports.

Brendon acknowledged the significant expertise that Simon and Rob bring: ‘I know from my own experience as president of the West Bromwich Albion Former Players’ Association that connecting with different generations of players is so important.

‘It’s been a long time coming but it’s excellent news that we’ve got Simon and Rob in post. They’re already out there making contact with player associations, and we’re delighted with the response that we’ve had so far. It’s a big job and we probably need more boots on the ground but that will come in time.’

And Brendon is in no doubt about the importance of bringing ex-pros together, face-to-face: ‘There’s no question that meeting in person always makes a difference. Players might not raise issues in a group situation but it’s amazing how they come up quietly to you and ask if they can have a word later. This is massively important to the Foundation as we try to help as many players as possible or direct them to someone else who can.’

The Foundation recently announced that more than 200 applicants had received support from the Student Living Expense Grant, with over £300,000 distributed to former footballers and scholars. The grant is designed to ease the financial burden of basic living costs, including rent, utilities and food, so that players can focus on their full-time university studies.
