Dementia

Making sure that you have picked the right care home

Choosing the right care home, can be a difficult task. Once you have identified a care home, or a couple of care homes that you are interested in, many people wonder what the next steps are. The first thing to do is make contact with the home to see if you can visit and meet with the staff. The home should be open and welcoming during this process. Before going to the home, you should write a list of questions that will address the main issues you would like to cover. We have put some questions together that you can use or, use them as inspiration to ask your own:

Care Home 1……………………. Cost p/w……………………… Availability………………
Care Home 2……………………. Cost p/w……………………… Availability………………
Care Home 3……………………. Cost p/w……………………… Availability………………

Home 1 Home 2 Home 3
Is the home within budget?
Does the home have any vacancies?
Is the home registered to support people living with Dementia?
How many residents can the home have?
Is the home designed/adapted for people living with Dementia?
Are the home and grounds secure?
Will the person with Dementia have their own room?
How many staff are on each shift?
How long have the current staff worked there?
Are residents encouraged to be independent?
Are all staff trained in Dementia?
What type of care can the home provide?
Can the home meet the person with Dementia’s needs?
Does the home provide nursing care?
Can the home support people with challenging needs?
Can the care home support end of life care?
Does the home provide a programme of activities for residents?
Are residents asked for their views on the home, and are those views acted upon?
Can residents decorate their rooms in the way they want to?
Is the home good at communicating with families?
Does the home have a complaints and compliments file that you can look at?
