‘We’re here for the players’ – Rob Milsom on his new role with the Foundation

During a 20-year playing career, Rob Milsom made over 450 appearances across England’s top five divisions and the Scottish Premier League. Now, he’s taken on the role of Beneficiary Liaison Officer with The Players Foundation, joining from Fulham FC, where he was an academy coach.

Rob and his fellow Beneficiary Liaison Officer, former Wales striker Simon Haworth, will provide an essential link between the work of the Foundation and ex-professional players across the country.

Rob said: ‘Having played the game, I understand what challenges and pressures there are around football, so I’m confident I’ll be relatable.  It’s vital to build trust with ex-players so that they know they can come to us for the help they need.’

And Rob believes there’s a misconception among many people around players’ earnings: ‘You read a lot about Premier League players on ridiculous sums of money but that wasn’t the case for older players or for players further down the leagues.

‘I think a large part of what we do will be focussed on reaching out to the older generation who weren’t earning the kind of money that’s in the game now, and ensuring they’re aware of what the charity can offer, not just in financial terms but also advice and support.’

Rob has been hugely encouraged by the reception he’s been given in meetings with former players: ‘It’s all about breaking down any barriers that exist and encouraging ex-pros to show a bit of vulnerability and not to be afraid to seek help when they need it.  Our message is very simple: there’s no judgement here, we want to help, so if you need support, please get in touch.’

The Players Foundation offers a comprehensive range of support to current and former professional footballers and scholars. More details can be found on our website – theplayersfoundation.org
